Quick summary
The door stays locked for your safety if there's water, high temperature or drum movement. Wait a few minutes, then drain any water. Don't yank the handle—it can break the lock.
The LG door lock is a safety feature that prevents opening while water, heat or spinning is present. First work out whether the washer is locking it on purpose or the lock itself has failed.
Unplug the appliance, close the water tap if there's a leak, and never open covers that need tools or expose wiring or circuits.
Possible causes
Water in the drum
If draining failed (e.g. OE), the door stays locked.
High internal temperature
After hot programs the release may be delayed until temperature drops.
Child lock
May block some operations depending on model.
Door lock or wiring fault
The lock doesn't release even with the cycle finished and no water.
Safe checks you can do
- Wait 2–5 minutes after the program ends; some models need time to release.
- If water is visible, run Spin/Drain or drain via the filter safely.
- Release child lock if it's active.
- Unplug for two minutes, then power on and try again.
When to stop checking immediately
- Don't force the handle or use tools on the lock.
- If the water is hot, let it cool before draining manually.
